nethyl ester (CAPE) and cortisone prevent proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR). Methods : Twenty pigmented rabbits were used in this study. All rabbits except controls received an intravitreal injection of 0.15 ml (75,000 U) of platelet-rich plasma into their left eye. The animals were divided into four groups: group I was treated with intraperitoneal injection of 0.5 ml (15 mmol/kg) of CAPE for 3 days, group II received 0.15 ml (4 mg/kg) of intravitreal cortisone, group III received nothing (blank group), and group IV (control group) received only 1 ml of 1% ethanol intraperitoneally daily for 3 days. Proliferative changes were graded in a masked fashion by indirect ophthalmoscopy for a 15-day followup period. The malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH) and total nitrite (NO) levels were measured in the vitreous humor. Results : The grades of PVR were B /C in group I, and C /D in group II. The PVR grade in the control group was C /D. The mean MDA level in group I (4.09/0.8 mmol/l) was significantly lower than in the blank group (6.0 mmol/l) (p B/0.05). The mean GSH level in group I (71.09/11.2 mmol/l) was significantly different than in the blank group (p B/0.05). The MDA and GSH levels in group II were 4.79/0.6 mmol/l and 53.89/7.8 mmol/l, respectively. Both these levels were not significantly different from the blank group (p / 0.05). The NO levels in both treatment groups were significantly lower than in the blank group (p B/0.001). Conclusion : These findings suggest an inhibitory effect of CAPE on PVR. The inhibitory effect was supported by lower MDA and NO with higher GSH levels in treatment groups than in the blank group. There was no detected significant effect of cortisone for preventing PVR experimentally.

Correction: Range-Wide Latitudinal and Elevational Temperature Gradients for the World's Terrestrial Birds: Implications under Global Climate Change

Species' geographical distributions are tracking latitudinal and elevational surface temperature gradients under global climate change. To evaluate the opportunities to track these gradients across space, we provide a first baseline assessment of the steepness of these gradients for the world's terrestrial birds. Within the breeding ranges of 9,014 bird species, we characterized the spatial gra...

Taxonomic and Geographic Bias in Conservation Biology Research: A Systematic Review of Wildfowl Demography Studies

Demographic data are important to wildlife managers to gauge population health, to allow populations to be utilised sustainably, and to inform conservation efforts. We analysed published demographic data on the world's wildfowl to examine taxonomic and geographic biases in study, and to identify gaps in knowledge. Wildfowl (order: Anseriformes) are a comparatively well studied bird group which ...

Spatial congruence in language and species richness but not threat in the world's top linguistic hotspot

Languages share key evolutionary properties with biological species, and global-level spatial congruence in richness and threat is documented between languages and several taxonomic groups. However, there is little understanding of the functional connection between diversification or extinction in languages and species, or the relationship between linguistic and species richness across differen...

Extinction risk is most acute for the world's largest and smallest vertebrates.

Extinction risk in vertebrates has been linked to large body size, but this putative relationship has only been explored for select taxa, with variable results. Using a newly assembled and taxonomically expansive database, we analyzed the relationships between extinction risk and body mass (27,647 species) and between extinction risk and range size (21,294 species) for vertebrates across six ma...

Estimating the size of the world's threatened flora.

The most commonly cited figure for the fraction of the global flora threatened with extinction—13%—is known to be a serious underestimate, because it does not include a reliable tally of species at risk in the tropical latitudes where most of the world’s plants grow (1, 2). Here we estimate the missing tropical data from global patterns of plant endemism. The results suggest that as many as hal...

Threatened preterm labor is a risk factor for impaired cognitive development in early childhood.

BACKGROUND Threatened preterm labor is a leading cause of hospital admission during pregnancy. Patients with an episode of threatened preterm labor who deliver at term are considered to have false preterm labor. However, threatened preterm labor has been proposed as a pathologic insult that is not always sufficient to induce irreversible spontaneous preterm birth but that could alter the normal...
